We would take our time and feel like proper tourists. My close friend Karen and I, have both lived in Altinkum for a number of years. We were eager to experience the tourist factor again and the only way to do this was to go outside of Altinkum. We wanted to see new places, ask locals for recommendations, meet new people and have days outside of our normal routines.

I really wanted to go on this road trip however in four years of marriage; my traveling partner had always been my husband. I needed to find out if he would be happy to let me go and decided the other way to accomplish this was pure bribery.
So, I cleaned the house from top to bottom, made him a nice meal, checked he was comfortable and happy, and then I asked him if I could go in my best Turkish accent. My husband thinks I sound so cute when I speak Turkish and I figured that along with the fluttering eyelashes, it would add to the “You have not got the heart to say no” factor.
As soon as I said it, he looked at me out of the corner of his eyes, his mouth dropped open and a great big frown appeared on his forehead. Bribery had worked well though because after a couple of questions and a few set rules, it turned out he was happy for me to go.

A Change of Traveling Partner
Now that hubby had said yes, I started to worry about other things. Hubby knows everything about me including my deep snoring, smelly feet and the way I grind my teeth in my sleep. He also puts up with my excessive chain smoking.
He blocks his ears to my snoring that makes people think a devastating earthquake is about to descend on them. After a long day sightseeing, we return to the room, he throws my trainers out of the window, onto the balcony and then holds his nose while I wash my smelly feet. The grinding of the teeth is easily solved with a quick dig in the ribs.
Would a new traveling partner be able to accept these things without breaking off our long friendship in the process? I decided the only thing to do would be to approach the ideas of separate rooms. Straight away, she said she did not mind and I breathed a hugh sigh of relief.
When Plans Have To Be Changed
The original plan was to drive where the road took us and find hotels in resorts that we liked. That plan was to change as well. Leading up to the road trip, we started reviewing the hotel search engines, to get an idea of prices and standards. After a quick phone call to one hotel, it transpired that checking in without a reservation can cost up to three times more. So we booked hotels in Bodrum center and the resorts of Turgetreis and Yalikavak.
Setting off for Bodrum
On Monday, we set off for the short drive to the Bodrum peninsula. Karen, my friend was driving. I was the navigator and within two hours we had arrived in the center of Bodrum. A walk around the town and a couple of beers in a beach side café, soon made me feel like I was on holiday.

We checked into our hotel with an aim of going out for the night. From my balcony of my room, I had a view of the sunset of Bodrum bay, such a romantic site that unfortunately I could not share with my husband. I would have liked to watch it with him but secretly I was quite pleased that I was being missed. You see, one day without me and he had jumped on the bus and gone to his mother’s house!
